I loved this... Your storytelling skills are steller and I really couldn't put this down. You made me want to visit that super unusual place and also you made me think more about the power of this "healing." My mom has always said I have strange psychic powers. Mostly that I'll say what she's thinking which freaks her out. Keep telling your stories, Erica. This one would also be fun as a novel... An elderly woman moving to a town full of Mediums to find her way beyond death. I loved the guy you had tea with especially.
I view psychics/mediums as like any other field of professionals. Some are more skilled/talented than others. Just like plumbers or doctors. Shop carefully.
Western NYS was called the 'burning ground' in the 19th century, because so many spiritualists, revivalists, and other religions were birthed there--it's where Joseph Smith got his start. I haven't been there but I know there's a lot of energy in the ground in the western Catskills and I imagine that's true farther west too. When you have been in places like that for a while it does change your state of mind and you can see or feel things you wouldn't ordinarily.
A ghostly orb like the one you describe appeared in a group photo of my partner's family, right above the empty chair they had placed for the sister who had died. Several people searched in the bushes behind where everyone was sitting and found no possible cause and became convinced that it was her spirit. But a friend who knows photography told me it was an effect known to be produced by a digital camera. Naturally I never mentioned that to them.
Who knew you had any interest in this? And maybe it was the influence of the Lily Dale location that brought out my psychic powers. As for woo woo, maybe I shouldn't have identified it as a Buddhist retreat, but new agey. After all I survived for years in woo-woo central.

Thank you so much Amy. Your support for my writing has helped keep me going. I had no idea if people would enjoy this but it seems they have.

Buddhist retreats are not full of woo-woo types!
